The rift valley in pictures: the fault walls, the falls, the clear water of
the fissures and the stops the day tours make around it. Every way to see them is listed
with the Iceland day tours to Thingvellir.
Most visits begin at Hakið, on the lip of the rift. From there a path drops into
Almannagjá, the gorge between the western fault wall and a long split slab of lava. The
flagpole on the ledge above marks the likely site of Lögberg, the Law Rock, where the Alþing
opened and closed each summer from around 930.
North of the assembly site the river Öxará falls into the gorge as Öxarárfoss. To the
east, coins glint on the floor of Peningagjá, and the water of Silfra is clear enough to see
far down the fissure. Beyond them lies Þingvallavatn, Iceland’s largest natural
lake.
The last pictures follow the Golden Circle onward, to the geothermal field at Geysir, to
Gullfoss and to Kerið crater.
