Why two hours changes Thingvellir
Thingvellir rewards time. The park sits in a rift valley seven kilometres wide,
with the Almannagjá fault on its western edge, the old assembly plain below it and Lake
Þingvallavatn to the south. On a coach you see the viewpoint and the path down the gorge.
With two hours you can walk down Almannagjá, carry on to Öxarárfoss and still stand at
Lögberg, the Law Rock, without hurrying.
This is where the Alþing met from around 930 until 1798, and Lögberg is where Iceland's
declaration of independence was signed in 1944. The history here is on the ground rather
than in a building, so time on foot matters more than at almost any other stop you will
make in Iceland.

You meet at Harpa, 101 Reykjavík, and the tour ends there too. Your confirmation
carries the exact time, so check it the day before. To be collected somewhere else, ask the
operator after you book.
If you are staying outside the centre, allow time to reach Harpa. Every tour's meeting
point is on the Thingvellir map.
Know before you go on a private half-day
Bring walking shoes. Two hours means real walking on gravel and boardwalk, so wear shoes with grip.
Check the weather first. The park is open and exposed; look at the Thingvellir weather and take a waterproof layer.
Pack a picnic if you like. Food is not part of the fare, and the café at the Leirar service centre sells food.
The church opens in summer. Þingvallakirkja opens 1 June to 31 August when a ranger is present; outside that you see it from outside.
The exhibition is optional. Heart of Iceland at Hakið takes about 40 minutes and costs 1,200 ISK for adults; 17 and under go free.
