Thingvellir National Park Private Half-Day Tour from Harpa

★★★★★ 5.0 (5 traveller reviews)

2 h at ThingvellirFrom Harpa, ReykjavíkYour group only

Two hours inside Thingvellir, with a private vehicle for your group and nobody else. A Golden Circle coach gives the park thirty to forty-five minutes; this tour gives it two hours and skips everything else. You meet at Harpa in Reykjavík and you are back four hours later. The fare covers a group of up to three, so two or three of you share one price.

What two private hours in the park give you

Two hours inside the park

Time to walk the rift, reach the waterfall and see the assembly site without watching the clock.

Your group only

Nobody else rides with you, so the pace and the order are yours.

One price for up to three

The fare covers a group of up to three, which suits a couple or three friends.

Harpa to Harpa in four hours

You are back in the city with the rest of your day free.

Step-free transport

The vehicle is wheelchair accessible, with room for a stroller and infant seats on request.

Why two hours changes Thingvellir

Thingvellir rewards time. The park sits in a rift valley seven kilometres wide, with the Almannagjá fault on its western edge, the old assembly plain below it and Lake Þingvallavatn to the south. On a coach you see the viewpoint and the path down the gorge. With two hours you can walk down Almannagjá, carry on to Öxarárfoss and still stand at Lögberg, the Law Rock, without hurrying.

This is where the Alþing met from around 930 until 1798, and Lögberg is where Iceland's declaration of independence was signed in 1944. The history here is on the ground rather than in a building, so time on foot matters more than at almost any other stop you will make in Iceland.

The price covers up to three people, which makes this the private choice for a couple or three friends. Check the fare for your party size when you pick a date. If you would rather share the day with other travellers, the other guided tours of Thingvellir start at $85 a person.

Who it suits, and who should book something else

Book this if

  • Thingvellir is the stop you care about, not a box on a list.
  • You are two or three and want to set your own pace.
  • You travel with a wheelchair, a stroller or an infant seat.
  • You have a morning or an afternoon, not a whole day.

Book something else if

Your four hours, from Harpa and back

  1. Meet your driver at Harpa, Reykjavík
  2. Private drive out to Thingvellir
  3. Two hours inside Thingvellir National Park
  4. Private drive back to Harpa

The rest of the four hours is the drive, about 40 km each way on Route 36. On a private tour the order inside the park is yours, so say what you want to see first: Almannagjá, the waterfall, the church or the lakeshore.

What your group's fare covers

Meeting your driver at Harpa

You meet at Harpa, 101 Reykjavík, and the tour ends there too. Your confirmation carries the exact time, so check it the day before. To be collected somewhere else, ask the operator after you book.

If you are staying outside the centre, allow time to reach Harpa. Every tour's meeting point is on the Thingvellir map.

Frequently asked questions

How long do you spend in Thingvellir?
Two hours, inside a four-hour tour from Harpa and back. That is enough to walk the rift, see Öxarárfoss and stand at the assembly site without rushing.
How is the price worked out?
The fare is per group of up to three, so two or three of you pay the same. Check the price for your party size when you choose a date.
Does it include Geysir and Gullfoss?
No, this tour is Thingvellir only. The Golden Circle day with Kerið covers the loop by coach for $89 a person, and the private Golden Circle tours do it in your own vehicle.
Can I snorkel Silfra on the same trip?
Not within this fare. Silfra is a separate booking: the snorkel meets at the fissure inside the park, so plan the timing when you book both.
Is it wheelchair accessible?
The vehicle is wheelchair accessible, strollers are fine and infant seats are available. Ask the operator about the paths you want to use in the park.
Do you need a ticket for the park?
No. Thingvellir has no gate and no admission charge. You only pay inside if you choose the Heart of Iceland exhibition, which is 1,200 ISK for adults.
What is the cancellation policy?
You can cancel for a full refund up to 24 hours before your start time. Check the forecast two days out, while you can still move your date for free.
