Golden Circle Tours from Reykjavík Cruise Port: 8 Thingvellir Shore Excursions Compared

The Strokkur geyser erupting at the Geysir geothermal area on the Golden Circle, a white column of water against a deep blue sky with a snow-patched hill behind

The short answer. Yes, you can do the Golden Circle from a cruise ship in Reykjavík. Eight days out take cruise passengers: five shared ones from $85 that run six and a half to nine hours, and three private ones. Seven collect at the port, and one runs departures timed to ship hours. The full loops give Thingvellir 30 minutes to an hour, and one private half-day spends all four of its hours there.

What decides it is your hours ashore. Set each day's length against the time between docking and your all-aboard call. These are the port-day pick of the Iceland day tours to Thingvellir.

The lowest fare from the port

Gray Line's coach collects at Skarfabakki in summer and runs six and a half hours.

Which Reykjavík cruise port will your ship use?

Reykjavík has two passenger berths. Large ships tie up at Skarfabakki in Sundahöfn, on a quay 650 m long. Small passenger vessels use Miðbakki in the Old Harbour, where the quay is 205 m.

The tours that name a port name Skarfabakki. If your ship is on Miðbakki, tell the operator when you book and agree where you meet. Carry your boarding pass ashore too: the port lets nobody back into the harbour area without a valid one.

Did you know? Vör, the port's new passenger terminal, came into use in spring 2026. It is Iceland's first purpose-built cruise terminal, with 5,500 m² over two floors.

How many hours in port do you need?

Start from your all-aboard time and work backwards. Allow up to 30 minutes on top of each day's length for the pickup.

  • 4 hours: Prime Tours, Thingvellir only.
  • 6.5 hours: the Gray Line and Reykjavik Excursions coaches.
  • 7 to 9 hours: BR Tours' private SUV.
  • 8 hours: both minibuses.
  • 9 hours: the coach with the horse farm.
  • 10 hours: the private day with the Blue Lagoon.

Useful tip. Have four things ready when you book: your ship's name, its docking time, your disembarkation time and your re-boarding time. Your Day Tours, Back to Iceland and BusTravel ask for all four. Plan around your all-aboard time, not the sailing time.

Which Thingvellir tour to book weighs a coach against a minibus and a private car.

Three coaches for the lowest fare

Gray Line's classic coach

From $85, this is six and a half hours with 30 minutes at Thingvellir. In summer it collects you from the Skarfabakki cruise port; be at the pickup point 30 minutes early. The coach seats up to 100, with an audio guide app in several languages. A foldable wheelchair can travel if someone with you helps you board.

The Reykjavik Excursions coach

From $88, you get the same six and a half hours and 30 minutes in the park, on a coach of up to 99. Cruise-port pickup is an option you select when you book.

The horse-farm day with cruise-timed departures

Magic Iceland's coach, from $85, runs about nine hours: 45 minutes at Thingvellir, then Geysir, Gullfoss, Kerið crater and a horse farm. On cruise days it runs departures timed to your ship's port hours. The meeting point depends on the option you book, so follow the time on your voucher.

Two small-group minibuses from Skarfabakki

Your Day Tours, 19 at most

From $121, you get eight hours and 45 minutes at Thingvellir. At the Skarfabakki terminal you follow the signs to the "Pre-Booked Tours" pickup point, east of the terminal buildings, and you are dropped back there at about 17:00. The minibus cannot carry or store suitcases, so it does not suit the day your cruise ends. The minimum age is six.

Back to Iceland, with Kerið

From $135, this is eight hours with 40 minutes at Thingvellir and a stop at Kerið. The minibus takes 16 at most and leaves from Skarfabakki harbour. Pickup starts at 09:00 and usually happens by 09:30. It needs two people booked to run.

A minibus from the quay

Both collect you at Skarfabakki and give the park 40 to 45 minutes.

Three private tours that collect at the ship

A private car waits for your party alone, and you give your port or your ship's name as the pickup. Private vs group Thingvellir tours weighs the extra cost, and every private fare is on Thingvellir private tours.

Golden Circle and the Blue Lagoon, 10 hours

Mercury Grail's day costs from $470 a person, with a minimum of two. It picks you up at the port at 10:00, gives Thingvellir an hour and ends at the Blue Lagoon before it drops you back. Lagoon tickets are not in the fare: bring swimwear and buy entry separately.

A luxury SUV with a flexible start

BR Tours, from $820 a person, runs seven to nine hours with 45 minutes at Thingvellir. You send the name of your port, and the start is arranged to suit you between 9:00 and 17:00.

Thingvellir only, in four hours

Prime Tours, from $477 a person, skips the rest of the loop and spends its four hours on the park. You give your cruise vessel's name as the pickup location, and it is the one that fits a short call. If you can reach Harpa yourself, the private half-day from Harpa costs $713 for a car of up to three.

What can you see at Thingvellir in 30 to 60 minutes?

Coaches stop at Hakið, by car park P1. The viewing platform stands beside the Visitor Centre, and from it you walk down into Almannagjá, the gorge on the western edge of the rift. This is where the Alþing, Iceland's general assembly, met from around 930 to 1798. Half an hour covers the view and the walk into the gorge.

With an hour you can add the Heart of Iceland exhibition in the Visitor Centre. It takes about 40 minutes and costs 1,200 ISK for adults, 600 ISK for seniors, and nothing at 17 and under.

You buy no ticket for the park itself: it charges a parking service fee per vehicle, not admission. A Thingvellir walking route and walking Almannagjá cover the ground, the Thingvellir map shows the coach stop, and visiting Thingvellir has the hours and fees.

Two more that take cruise passengers, with a catch

BusTravel's coach, the Golden Circle day with Kerið, from $89, runs eight and a half hours with 40 minutes at Thingvellir. It asks for your ship's details, but it leaves from Bus Stop 12 at Höfðatorg, so you get yourself there. The Secret Lagoon day, from $133, picks up at the Skarfabakki cruise terminal, but it runs ten hours with Thingvellir as a photo stop.
